National cricket team coach Shane Jurgensen pointed to the positives in the long break between international matches, labeling it an ‘opportunity’ to the media on Sunday, the Tigers’ first day back at the camp.
‘It’s always good to play matches, but there’s also a good side to having a break. It provides an opportunity to work on individual skills, which isn’t possible during a series,’ said Jurgensen, ‘They [players] can try to adapt to new things that they feel suits them.’
On his first day in charge since shedding the ‘interim’ tag and being awarded a big contract extension, the Australian coach outlined his plans for the first week of the national team camp, focusing both on skills and fitness.
‘We’re moving on to the next stage now. The DPL was potentially going to be on, but we’re back on and we’re going ahead with our batting and bowling,’ he said, noting the effect of the uncertainty presented by the current Dhaka Premier League impasse.
‘We’ll do batting and bowling today [Sunday], then tomorrow [Monday] we’ll do a little bit of fitness and later in the week we’re scheduling a few games to make sure the fitness and skills are alright,’ he continued. He said that the games would have a bearing on the selection of the ‘A’ team for the upcoming tour of England.
‘They’re looking to play a
few games at the end of the week so the selectors can have a look at the potential ‘A’ team players,’ said Jurgensen.
The coach also provided an update on the condition of seamer Robiul Islam, saying he ‘has a small hamstring strain, so he’ll have to be a few days out.’
Jurgensen expressed optimism about oft-injured seamer Mashrafee bin Murtaza’s fitness. ‘Mashrafee is coming on quite nicely, actually,’ he said, adding that opportunities to work with the bowler have been scarce in the past.
‘I’ve been trying to work on his bowling for a couple of years and he’s unfortunately been injured or committed so I’m very happy with his progress.’
