The national selection panel of Bangladesh Cricket Board has almost finalised the players’ pool for the upcoming series against West Indies scheduled to begin in January next year, informed chief selector Minhajul Abedin on Tuesday.
After taking all necessary arrangements to safely stage Bangladesh’s return to international cricket in a bio-secure environment, BCB has now shifted focus to the team and will announce the team soon after the completion of the ongoing Bangabandhu Twenty20 Cup, said Minhajul.
‘We have almost finalised the pool for the national team after a sitting with the coach and the team management. We will declare the names within one day of the closure of this competition,’ Minhajul told the reporters.
‘For the Tests we will name a 20 player pool and for ODI [one-day internationals] we will give the names of 21 cricketers,’ he added.
The players will also begin training soon after the ongoing tournament ends on December 18 and the board is also planning to arrange four-day matches to prepare the players for the Test series.
‘Practice will start from the very beginning of January. We are proceeding with a plan; we will try to make the best possible team for the series against West Indies,’ said the chief selector.
‘We have discussed with the team management about staging a few four-day matches, we will finalise everything after this tournament. In the Tests, we will prefer the experienced cricketers,’ he added.
Minhajul also expressed the board’s plan to create a separate pool of 12 pacers, who have performed well in recent tournaments, to nurture them for international cricket.
‘We have made a good plan for the development of pacers. We are trying to make a pool of 12 pacers for all three formats so that we can have a good pace attack in every format of the game.
‘We have nearly completed everything for that. In recent tournaments, we have seen that these 12 pacers have some consistency, if they remain fit it would beneficial for us,’ said the former Bangladesh captain. -new age
