Bangladesh Twenty20 captain Mahmudullah Riyad tested COVID-19 positive on Sunday in a blow to his prospect of playing in the upcoming Pakistan Super League and Banganabdhu Cup Twenty20 tournament.
Confirming the news, Mahmudullah said he was surprised with the result of his test as he did not have any symptom.
Mahmudullah was drafted as one of the foreign players for Pakistan Super League team Multan Sultan and was supposed to leave the country for Pakistan on November 10 to take part in the play-off stage.
He undertook a mandatory coronavirus test before air travel with the result showing him positive.
‘I was surprised with a positive result from my COVID-19 test on November 6,’ Mahmudullah said.
To clear the doubt, Mahmudullah said he went through another test, which brought the same result.
`I didn’t have a fever or any other symptoms other than a bit of cold. Nothing more than that. I tested a second time [Saturday], and that also came out as positive. I am now in rest and isolation in a separate room. I am a little worried about my wife and kids. I am seeking everyone’s prayers for quick recovery, and for my family’s well-being,’ he said.
Being a COVID-19 positive, Mahmudullah will now miss the PSL play-off campaign and could also miss out the early stage of the domestic T20 tournament.
`It is disappointing to miss the chance to play in the PSL. It is a competitive tournament. It was a good opportunity to play a couple of matches there. I am now looking forward to getting well soon and trying to participate in our Bangabandhu T20 Cup,’ he said. -new age
