Sri Lankan Cricket Board claimed to have the green signal from their Pakistani counterparts to host the Asia Cup Twenty20, scheduled to take place in September, though the Asian Cricket Council was yet to declare a host.
ACC’s executive body met through a video conference on Monday, where the board presidents and chief executive officers of India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Afghanistan and Sri Lanka discussed about the possible venue options for the marquee event.
The ACC, however, didn’t reach any conclusion and decided to take the final call after more deliberation.
‘In the light of impact and consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic, possible venue options for the Asia Cup 2020 were discussed and it was decided to take the final decision in due course,’ ACC said in a press release.
But SLC president Shammi Silva claimed in Sri Lankan Newspaper ‘Ceylon Today’ that they had already received the nod from Pakistan Cricket Board, who held the hosting right of this year’s Asia cup, to host the tournament.
‘We had a discussion with PCB and they have already agreed to our hosting this edition due to the present world situation. We had an online meeting today [Monday] and they basically gave us the green light to host the tournament,’ Silva was quoted saying in the newspaper.
Bangladesh Cricket Board president Nazmul Hasan, who was also the president of the ACC, told New Age that Sri Lanka were considered as hosts in the meeting but no final decision was taken.
‘We had a discussion about Sri Lanka being the possible host but nothing is yet finalized,’ Nazmul said.
SLC earlier expressed interest to host the Indian Premier League as the island nation was in a better condition in terms of handling the coronavirus pandemic in the South Asian region.
